The Bangladesh Southeast Combined Workers Federation (BSCWF) is a trade union organization promoting and protecting the rights of the formal and informal sector workers in Bangladesh, particularly in the Rajshahi and the Khulna division.
In March the BSCWF conducted a survey among the affiliated basic union members in the different districts where it is active. The results of the survey showed that about 2 thousand workers are jobless as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. These workers and their families are experiencing extremely harsh times at the moment.
At present, thirty thousand workers are enlisted with BSCWF through different basic unions. About two thousand enlisted workers of BSCWF are seriously affected. Unfortunately it has not been possible to support all workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, through the support received from the World Organization of Workers – WOW the BSCWF has been able to distribute food packages to 235 jobless workers and their families most severely affected. These food packages consist of the most basic items (Rice-10 kgs, Pulse-2 kgs, Potato-5 kgs, Oil-2 liters, Soap-2 pcs).
Every day the situation is deteriorating in Bangladesh. In the lockdown situation increasingly more workers are losing their jobs and as a result of that these workers and their families experience extreme hardships.
Since the virus is not under control yet it is to be expected that workers in Bangladesh will be further hit. No income means no food. WOW will closely monitor the situation and support where possible.
In solidarity!
