On Thursday 24 February 2022 the world was shocked by the brutal and shameless Russian attacks on the Ukraine and the invasion of Ukrainian territory. The build-up of tension and statements of aggression resulted in actions beforehand unimaginable. Since then many soldiers and civilians on both sides were killed by attacks and actions from both sides.
The aggressive tone of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergej Lavrov clearly demonstrate their intention of maintaining a strong foothold in the Ukraine and the region. The pressure put on the Ukraine not to become a member of NATO is a clear sign that Putin wants to keep the Ukraine in his sphere of influence.
The current attacks on the sovereign state Ukraine must be condemned by all means possible. It cannot be so that Russia singlehandedly acknowledges the independence of two pro-Russian regions in the Ukrainian provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk. It cannot be so that an independent, sovereign, democratic country is attacked by its larger neighbour. It cannot be so that a larger neighbour invades this independent, sovereign, democratic country. What is taking place in the Ukraine is a disgrace and the international community should try all it can to prevent further bloodshed, disruption and chaos. Furthermore, the international community should show solidarity and support with the people now fleeing their homes to safe countries in the region. The solidarity shown and aid given by European citizens is heart-warming. Let us all hope that this is temporary and that the dispersed Ukrainian people can soon return to their homes. The only possibility to achieve this an end to the attacks and invasion.
The World Organization of Workers strongly condemns the current actions by the Russian President Putin. The participants of the Krifa / WOW / EZA seminar gathered together in Valencia express their sincere support to and deep solidarity with our colleagues of VOST “VOLYA” in the Ukraine. We further express solidarity to all Ukrainian citizens affected by this terrible conflict and we wish them a lot of strength and wisdom in these volatile times.
