The Covid-19 pandemic has spread to all provinces in Indonesia. Some cities and regions are very much affected, including Jakarta and its surroundings which is the economic heart of Indonesia. This situation weakens the economy and decreases the production, having a direct impact on the workers, the employers and the population as a whole. Many companies are unable to continue the production process due to the limited supply of raw materials, lack of distribution and application of a strict Health Protocol. Many workers who work from home receive either a partial wages, are not paid at all or even lose their jobs.
In order to do something the FSB NIKEUBA took the initiative to be in dialogue with both the employers and employees to come to the best possible solutions for both parties. Additionally, there was an initiative to organize food aid for members affected by Covid-19. This to lighten the economic difficulties of members.
The central board of FSB NIKEUBA installed a team to streamline the support (from the process of making the food packages to the actual distribution according to the target). The packages included:
- Rice, 5 kg
- Cooking Oil, 2 kg
- Sugar, 1 kg
- Instant Noodles, 20 packs
- Face Mask, 1 pcs
- Hand Sanitizer, 1 small bottle
- Sauce, 1 bottle
- Canned Fish, 1 big can
- Canned Fish, 2 small can
All together 500 packages were made and distributed among FSB Nikeuba members from 8 plant levels.
Carlos Rajagukguk, President of FSB Nikeuba along with other members of the central board attended the activities in three regions (Tangerang, Jakarta & Garut). In each of these activities, it was conveyed to all members to always take care of themselves to avoid Covid-19 by always using a mask, hand sanitizer and washing their hands with soap. Also, if industrial relation disputes occur, it is to be advised to promote social dialogue as the most appropriate solution. “We must all strive for the best solution for all parties”, Carlos Rajagukguk said while thanking the Word Organization of Workers (WOW) and its members for the support and solidarity.
In Indonesia only a few trade unions have been able to give attention to members who are affected by Covid-19. Though this was not an aim the solidarity resulted in an increased level of trust of the members in their union FSB Nikeuba.
